by Douglas M. Carpenter
While writing A Powerful Blessing: The Life of Charles Colcock Jones Carpenter, Sr., Douglas Carpenter has depended almost entirely on primary sources: letters, diaries, notes and clippings, scrap books, conversations with people who were present during events, and his own memory of his father. Going against some editors who said a biography of Bishop Carpenter should be written by a dispassionate third person, Doug has written about his father’s whole life, not just the parts that “would sell”. He also wanted to provoke thought about what qualities were in a personality of someone who was such a “powerful blessing” to so many.
